As a future teacher, the thought of copyright and fair use is a thought I probably should've given greater consideration. When I went to school I noticed the differences in material given based on the teacher. Some used curriculum-based made by the same people who made the course textbooks, some used teachers pay teachers, some made their own and some didn't have any technological materials for their class. I would love to create material for my class and to be able to infuse it with the lessons I teach. I do recognize if I'd ever try to sell any of my lessons I would need to make sure I can have ownership of the material, and in doing so correctly make the best lessons I can offer.
Academic dishonesty is my most feared issue as a teacher. I plan to teach middle and high school English and History and through my years as a student I have experienced plenty of my friends showing apathy toward learning and because of that, findi
ng shortcuts and ways to cheat in class. The easiest way students would be able to cheat in my class being an English teacher is by using AI technology such as ChatGPT. What I would do as a teacher to make sure honesty is kept, would be to create a classroom environment that welcomes critical thinking and lessens the weight of at-home essays as compared to in-person writing. While I'd still want to see writing projects that have taken long periods, I would ChatGPT check those as well and inform the students so they know that I wouldn't take any assignments that haven't been honestly done.
The newsletter assignment helped me understand what goes on behind the creation of a newsletter specifically a newsletter for the families of my students. In the future, I would allow myself more time to begin making one and to attempt more such as making a hall pass and organizing the newsletter more neatly. As a future educator, creating these newsletters helps inform the parents I definitely imagine myself working on making these more to perfect them and help the parents know what's going on in the classroom. Not only was the assignment an interesting first to do and beginning to think about, but it was also a look into a practical item that is needed as a teacher.
I understand that when I make my own educational resources, copyright and fair use are important considerations for me as a future educator. I want to make sure that everything I develop is both legally sound and useful, having observed teachers utilize anything from pre-made curriculum to resources like Teachers Pay Teachers. In addition, I seek to reduce academic dishonesty by creating an environment in the classroom that values honesty and critical thinking, particularly with the use of AI tools. Finally, the newsletter assignment showed me the significance of good communication with parents, and I’ll absolutely focus on refining that skill as a teacher.
